Something new: Aalborg’s first creative candle workshop is opening now

by Emil Kjær Jørgensen

Aalborg has plenty of creative cafés – but soon, a completely new kind is opening at Boulevarden 10.

Back in January, MigogAalborg revealed that Julia Denise Midtgaard is behind the upcoming creative café BloomBoom, which will also be the city’s first candle-making workshop.

Now she’s ready to open the doors to a creative universe beyond the ordinary. On Sunday, June 1st, she’s inviting everyone to a grand opening reception in the newly decorated and colorful premises.

“I’ve spent the past six months setting up the place, and of course, I’m excited to see how the people of Northern Jutland will receive the concept,” Julia says.

A universe of candles, flowers, and creativity

BloomBoom Studio is both a creative café and a candle workshop where you can dive into handmade projects like candle pouring, paper flowers, jesmonite, linocut printing, and much more.

You can book a table just like at other creative cafés and make your own candles, scented candles, or paint on candles – but also create decorative flowers, candle holders, and other trinkets.

The café spans 114 square meters. And even though a few finishing touches were still missing when we visited the place Friday afternoon, we immediately felt welcome in the rustic yet inviting surroundings.

Julia has decorated the space with homemade paper flowers in every imaginable shape and color. At the back, there’s a large event room – adorned with a colorful flower wall, among other things.

“In the event room, I’ll host workshops for both children and adults – with guest instructors skilled in everything from tufting and watercolor to crepe paper flowers,” Julia explains.

Join the opening reception

On Sunday, June 1, there will be an opening reception from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, where you can get a glimpse of the many creative possibilities BloomBoom offers.

Lasse from Trees In Toronto will perform an intimate concert, setting the perfect mood. You can also win gift cards to the café – and if you book your next event that day, you’ll receive a 20% discount.

From doctor to entrepreneur

Creativity has always played a big role in Julia’s life.

“I love working with my hands. I’ve had nearly every hobby you can imagine,” she previously told MigogAalborg.

But the path to opening a creative café is far from traditional. Julia is actually a trained doctor and has worked in the healthcare sector since 2016 – most recently in adult psychiatry, where she had her last day on the job just last week.

“When you get an idea, you have to follow through with it. I need to give this a try. I’ve thought a lot about how happy it would make me to have this as my job – and at the same time make others happy. Almost no matter how it turns out, it deserves a shot,” she says.

At the café, you can get barista coffee, cold drinks, and something for a light bite – like homemade bread or cake. Julia also hopes to give guests the option to bring their own food or order takeout.

And she dreams of staying open in the evenings.

“I’m constantly getting new ideas. I just need to get everything settled, but I’m really looking forward to it,” Julia finishes.
