Bonfires and hygge: Here are this year’s Sankt Hans parties in Aalborg

by Megan McPhee Christensen

Tomorrow is Sankt Hans (Saint John’s Eve) – a traditional Danish feast that is celebrated each summer with big bonfires.

Usually, Aalborg and the rest of Northern Jutland are packed with cozy parties around the bonfire but corona has put a stop to many events.

Luckily, there are still a few places where midsummer songs will be sung and the evening will be enjoyed.

We have put together an overview of the Sankt Hans parties that we have found.

If you have a large arrangement planned, that you want to add to the list then write an email to info@migogaalborg.dk

Sankt Hans by Musikkens Hus at Musikkens Plads

Musikkens Hus invites you to a summer evening where Phillip Faber, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, North Jutland’s Girl’s Choir, and Klarup Girl’s Choir will lead us through a touching rendition of timeless classics.

Søren Huss was meant to be featured as a soloist, but due to illness he, unfortunately, needed to cancel.

On the upside, Musikkens Hus managed to find a fantastic replacement in the form of Helene Blum and Harald Haugaard.

As the tradition goes, we will of course also hear a moving midsummer speech that evening.

To reduce the number of guests at Musikkens Plads, the speech will actually be held in the Concert Hall by none other than Rasmus Bjerg.

There is an entry fee of 255 kroner.

Melodi Grand Prix concert on the harbourfront

This children’s event promises a festive MGP-concert with the 2021 winner Emilie, the 3rd placed Superbrothers, and the finalist Mikkel.

Here, the youngest in the family can look forward to hearing numbers like ‘Ikke som de andre piger’, ‘Vi vil ha’ lov’ and ‘Jeg tror på kærlighed’.

The concert starts at 18:15, but Musikkens Plads will be open from 17:30 where there will be plenty of opportunity for midsummer coziness with free marshmallows and biscuits, which can be roasted over the bonfire flames.

The concert will last for 45 minutes when the children’s portion of the program ends.

In the restaurant, you can have a delicious 3-course meal, and outdoors by the bonfire, there will be the possibility to buy beer and wine, together with diverse dishes from the grill from 16:00 onwards.

You can also look forward to a beautiful summer evening with a DJ, tones from the Danish song treasure by the chamber choir Coro Misto, a bonfire speech by Jan Nymark Thaysen, councillor in Aalborg Municipality, and lots of fun both inside and outside of Café Lindholm.

Sankt Hans Parties for young and old

The Margrethe Church on Revlingbakken in Aalborg is hosting two bonfire parties.

First, one intended for the children, then later in the evening for the adults. But of course, they can be combined into a delightful evening for the whole family.

There will be speeches by the bonfire, music, marshmallows, and much more for all ages on Sankt Hans.

Roadtrip to Sankt Hans in Blokhus

If you have the desire to experience something else entirely or happen to be in a summerhouse north of Aalborg then there is also a big Sankt Hans party planned in Blokhus.

Normally thousands get together on the beach in Blokhus for bonfires and music, but the restrictions on gatherings are not completely lifted yet. That’s why this year’s bonfire party has moved to Blokhus Torv where, among others, Tørfisk will be playing.

There is ticketed entry to the event.
