Made entirely from scratch: Warm churros and roasted almonds are back in Aalborg

Most people are by now familiar with the Spanish delicacy churros — and if not, it’s about time to get acquainted.

The crispy, homemade treat can once again be found at Salling, where Mandelboden adorns the small square with a cozy atmosphere and the scent of Christmas.

As always, the Christmas spirit is turned all the way up when the festive cart is ready with homemade Spanish churros, freshly made right before your eyes on the street.

While you wait, you can decide whether you’d like them served with sugar, powdered sugar, chocolate sauce, soft ice — or perhaps something entirely different.

Of course, we stopped by to have a taste ourselves.

Made from scratch

That delicious, fresh taste doesn’t come by itself. Everything is made from scratch with love and carefully selected ingredients — including Elephant wheat flour, which, together with boiling water and a mix of spices, forms the base of the Spanish specialty.

“There’s nothing secret about the recipe — you just need the special Elephant wheat flour,” says owner Alexander Pedersen when we ask about any secret ingredients.

As we place our order, we curiously watch as the raw ingredients are transformed into the Spanish delicacy.

Alexander starts the electric kettle, then pours the boiling water together with the Elephant wheat flour and spices into the mixer.

The dough comes together in the machine, which pipes out the iconic ridged sticks into the fryer, where they turn golden and crispy.

Finally, he tops them with sugar, soft ice, and chocolate sauce — and they’re ready for us to dig in. What a taste experience!

The combination of texture, flavor, and aroma earns top marks — and it definitely won’t be the last time we stop by this year.

What’s the cost?

A standard portion of warm churros with sugar, cinnamon sugar, or powdered sugar costs DKK 49, with the option to add chocolate, strawberry, or caramel sauce for DKK 6, or soft ice for DKK 15.

If you’re not that into the Spanish specialty, or if it’s not quite enough to satisfy your sweet tooth, you can also buy freshly roasted almonds.

The roasted almonds come in several varieties — plain, with licorice, or with hazelnuts.

A single bag costs DKK 35, two bags are DKK 60, and a large 400-gram bag to take home for the Christmas table costs DKK 100.

If you prefer something a bit fresher but still sweet, Mandelboden also sells candied apples, priced at DKK 30.

The Christmas cart has become a beloved tradition in Aalborg — a cozy little pit stop amid the buzz of holiday shopping, where both children and adults can gather around the sweet scent of roasted almonds and warm churros.

Stop by Mandelboden in front of Salling, soak up the festive atmosphere, and taste the flavors of Christmas.

They are open daily from 11:00 to 18:00 until December 30 — and on busy days, they stay open even longer.
