Volunteers needed: Become part of the Tall Ships Races crew in 2026

by Lucas Qureshi

Absolutely no sailing experience is required.

Just curiosity and enthusiasm, if you would like to sail along as part of the crew in the Tall Ship Races.

And now you have the opportunity, as Aalborg is once again on the route of the international regatta in 2026.

Right now, trainees aged 15–25 are being sought for the beautiful tall ships, which at the end of July will sail from Stavanger in Norway to Aalborg.

But it is more than just a unique experience.

As a trainee, you also become part of a tradition-rich event that began in 1956 and today features participating ships from more than 30 nations.

“A phenomenal trip”

Whether or not you have sailing experience, lifelong memories are almost guaranteed.

At least according to Christopher Colberg Jensen, who himself was a trainee on one of the ships when Aalborg was last a host port on the route.

“Sailing in The Tall Ships Races 2022 was without a doubt the best experience I have ever had. It was an all-around phenomenal trip – the sense of community, the sea, and the adventure.”

On the week-long voyage, you work in teams with rotating tasks:

Steering the ship, setting sails, cooking, cleaning, climbing the masts – and not least social activities with the other trainees.

In addition to being a fantastic summer experience, the trip will also teach you about teamwork, leadership, and communication – all in English.

From Christopher Colberg Jensen, the message is clear.

“If you get the chance to come aboard, take it! I will definitely do it again.”

Limited spaces

If this sounds like something for you, don’t hesitate to sign up.

On the trip from Stavanger to Aalborg, there are only 100 places available for young trainees, and once these are filled, you will be placed on a waiting list.

There will be a participation fee of DKK 2,500, but this covers almost all expenses for the trip.

This includes transport from Aalborg to Stavanger, food and accommodation on the ship for the entire journey, merchandise, and participation in crew activities while in port.

For a full week of experiences during the summer holidays, it can hardly be done cheaper.

Travel itinerary:

  • July 23: Departure from Aalborg to Stavanger
  • July 24: Arrival in Stavanger and boarding of ships
  • July 25: Departure from Stavanger towards Aalborg
  • No later than July 30: Arrival in Aalborg
  • August 1: Disembarkation from the ships

The only requirements are that you must be at least 15 years old by July 24, 2026, and must not turn 26 until August 2, 2026.

To book a place, you must register via the following link.

If you need further information, you can also contact Lone Søe Smed at lsm@aalborg.dk or Mette Pejstrup Kjær at mpk@aalborg.dk.
