Closures ahead: Culture Bridge and railway bridge affected by rail works
Major changes are on the way for train passengers, cyclists and pedestrians who need to cross the Limfjord.
From Sunday evening, work on the railway bridge between Aalborg and Nørresundby will be significantly stepped up.
This is according to Nordjyllands Trafikselskab on its website.
This means that train services across the bridge will be suspended during the evening and night for almost a month.
At the same time, the Culture Bridge, which runs alongside the railway bridge, will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists at night.
Closed in the evening and at night
According to Nordjyllands Trafikselskab, the railway bridge will be closed due to track work from Sunday, September 13, until Sunday, October 11.
The closures will take place during the evening and night from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
This will affect train services, with the first morning train between Aalborg and Hjørring being replaced by replacement buses on the section between Aalborg and Lindholm.
You can read more about this on NT’s website here.
The many Aalborg residents who normally use the Culture Bridge to walk or cycle across the Limfjord will also be affected.
Signs at the bridge state that the Culture Bridge will be closed from Monday, September 14, until October 12 between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
During the daytime, it will still be possible to use the Culture Bridge.
The railway bridge is being electrified
The closure comes as Banedanmark is carrying out extensive electrification work on the railway through Aalborg.
The railway line through the city and onwards towards Aalborg Airport is being prepared for electric trains. The work includes, among other things, installing foundations and masts as well as hanging overhead power lines.
The railway bridge across the Limfjord is also part of the electrification project.
Banedanmark’s construction description for the project states explicitly that the tracks across the existing lifting bridge from 1938 are to be electrified.
However, the bridge’s unique construction makes the work more complicated than on a standard railway line.
According to Banedanmark, installing the overhead power system therefore requires technical modifications to the railway bridge itself.
Banedanmark also states that work is currently underway to install overhead wires in Aalborg and that the electrification work primarily takes place during the evening and at night.
Remember the replacement buses
For train passengers, it is a good idea to keep a close eye on the journey planner over the coming weeks.
NT states that replacement buses will be operating on the affected departures, meaning passengers should be aware of changes to journey times.
You can keep up to date on NT’s website.
For pedestrians and cyclists, however, the message is simple:
If you need to cross the Limfjord after 8:00 p.m. during this period, you will have to find another route.
The Culture Bridge will reopen every morning at 5:00 a.m.
