See the moose up close: Guided car safari in Lille Vildmose
If you think Africa is a little too far away for a safari trip, there is good news.
You can actually go on safari in search of some of Denmark’s largest animals – right here in North Jutland.
About half an hour to the east lies Lille Vildmose, where you can join a guided tour through the land of the moose and get the chance to experience these impressive animals in their natural surroundings.
You can choose between 3 October, 10 October, 11 October and 12 October from 13:00 to 15:00.
During the tour, you follow a guide through Lille Vildmose in your own car, while learning more about the bog’s rich wildlife and plant life through your car radio.
The route is planned on the day to give you the best possible chance of experiencing some of the area’s highlights. And if you are lucky, you might spot one of the large moose that have been part of Lille Vildmose’s natural environment since 2015.
Along the way, there will be 2–3 stops at selected viewpoints and boardwalks.
The tour may take you past Portlandmosen, where you can feel the characteristic bouncy ground beneath your feet, Toftesø with its large cormorant colony, or Mulbjerge, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Kattegat.
And although the moose is of course the main attraction, there are plenty of opportunities to experience other wildlife along the way.
Denmark’s largest deer species
The moose is the world’s largest living deer species and can weigh between 300 and 500 kilograms.
In Lille Vildmose, the moose roam an area of around 21 square kilometres, where they also play an important role in maintaining the natural environment.
The large animals eat birch and willow, among other plants, which could otherwise contribute to drying out the raised bog. In this way, the moose help keep the trees under control and preserve the unique landscape.
So this is not only an opportunity to see an impressive animal – the moose also help protect the area they live in.
Remember your car radio and practical clothing
The tour takes place in the public Mellemområde area and in your own car, so it is important that your car has a working radio so you can hear the guide along the way.
It is also recommended that you wear practical clothing and sturdy footwear and bring binoculars if possible.
The guided tour is aimed at an adult audience and runs from 13:00 to 15:00.
The next tour is Saturday, 3 October, departing from Lille Vildmosecentret at Vildmosevej 100 in Storvorde.
Tickets cost DKK 195.
So if you have always dreamed of going on safari but do not have plans for a trip to Africa, a visit to Lille Vildmose could be a more local North Jutland alternative.
And who knows – perhaps the king of the bog will suddenly appear right in front of your car.
