Must-try treats: Here are Aalborg’s best fastelavn buns

Vejgaard-bageri-fastelavnsbolle-4-1200x720-1-1024x614

It’s probably no secret that for quite a while now we’ve been on a fastelavn bun raid in Aalborg.

We can safely promise that we’ve tasted the very best the fastelavn bun scene has to offer, so of course it’s our duty to gather them in a guide for those of you who still haven’t made it through the entire list.

In this guide, we’ve selected the fastelavn buns that we believe are the absolute best – but.

We also have to say that when people have asked us for “the city’s absolute best,” it’s been impossible to give a single answer.

The selection has simply been so broad and varied that it really comes down to personal taste.

We’ve decided to pick the seven we liked the most this year, so you can make sure the final treat of the season hits the spot.

Happy hunting!

BreadByKaerup

As soon as we started testing fastelavn buns, our comment section quickly filled up with recommendations to try BreadByKaerup.

And there’s definitely a good reason for that.

The fastelavn bun from BreadByKaerup has previously been named one of Denmark’s ten best by the Nordic region’s largest experience platform, Truestory.

You can be absolutely sure that, true to tradition, they make a soft yeast-based bun with custard, lemon curd, and chocolate on top.

There’s a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, harmony between the amount of custard and dough, and it smells wonderfully of cardamom and chocolate.

It’s a guaranteed winner.

In the display case, you can also find a croissant-based bun with vanilla custard, raspberry jam, and whipped pastry cream – topped with a ring of crispy shortcrust pastry and freeze-dried raspberries.

Vejgaard Bakery

It’s no joke that there’s often a long line outside the bakery on Hadsundvej in Vejgaard.

The bakery has previously held the title of Denmark’s Best Bakery, and for that reason, you need to be early to get your hands on their delicious pastries before they sell out.

This also applies to their extremely popular fastelavn buns, of which they have four varieties this year.

The four versions are: one with a rum ball, one with Belgian caramel and vanilla custard, one with toasted marzipan, and one with raspberry. All are made in the traditional style.

Vejgaard Bakery generally bakes a really good fastelavn bun. It’s light and fluffy, but at the same time has plenty of texture, making it simply delicious.

Here, we were absolutely blown away, and we ended up giving the Belgian caramel version a perfect 10 out of 10.

One of the very best fastelavn buns we’ve tasted this year!

På Fjorden

På Fjorden has once again outdone themselves, and this year they are offering four different fastelavn buns, each bringing something entirely unique to Aalborg’s fastelavn bun scene.

På Fjorden has, more than anyone, reimagined the slightly heavy classic and created four small, exotic, and elegant reinterpretations.

This year, the café presents four fastelavn bun varieties that all balance sweet with sour and creamy with fresh.

Introducing: Pear, lemon, and vanilla; Salted caramel, lemon curd, and whipped cream; Matcha, mango, and whipped cream; and Marzipan, blackcurrant, and vanilla.

All of them are built on a modern choux au craquelin dough – a light choux pastry with a crisp, crackled top that adds texture and a more refined appearance.

Their choux au craquelin with caramel, in particular, was a hit with us.

It tasted like MORE, and we would have happily licked the plate if it weren’t for the fact that we were enjoying the bun in such lovely surroundings.

Across all of På Fjorden’s fastelavn buns, the common thread is excellent craftsmanship. Real care and attention have gone into every detail.

Penny Lane Café

You can’t talk about fastelavn buns in Aalborg without saying “Penny Lane,” and the popular café had conjured up five different versions.

In addition, they’ve launched a limited edition each week!

Overall, there’s a high standard across all of Penny Lane’s fastelavn buns, regardless of filling. Even though we’ve visited a few times – or five – we never get tired of them.

No matter what you choose, you’re guaranteed to go home with something delicious.

The Daily Brew

This year, there’s a new player in the game.

For the first time, The Daily Brew on Nørregade has taken on the fastelavn bun.

During the first couple of weeks, North Jutlanders could sink their teeth into a lemon-moon-inspired fastelavn bun made with croissant dough.

It has now been replaced with another childhood favorite: the raspberry roulade.

Must-try treats: Here are Aalborg’s best fastelavn buns
The raspberry roulade is easily recognizable in taste, though not in shape.

Here, the roulade layers are folded into a croissant-like fastelavn bun, filled with homemade raspberry jam and a vanilla cream that deliberately leans on the light, airy “foam” many remember from the classic roulade.

If you prefer the fully classic version, Henrik has also created a traditional fastelavn bun with just the right amount of custard.

Fru Søgaard

This year, Fru Søgaard offers three varieties on the menu – all in the “Craquelin” style.

Craquelin fastelavn buns are made from choux pastry baked with a small cookie on top. The cookie gives the bun a beautiful crackled appearance and a delightfully crispy exterior.

The three varieties are Raspberry and vanilla cream, Lemon curd and white chocolate, and the classic Nutella and hazelnut.

The last one in particular was a big hit with us. A filling of Nutella cream is something we haven’t really seen elsewhere, and it’s absolutely brilliant combined with the crisp shell.

But that certainly doesn’t mean we weren’t impressed with the other two varieties. It didn’t take long before there was no trace left of any of the three fastelavn buns on the table.

So our verdict is pretty clear:

We can recommend all three fastelavn buns – ideally all at once. They were a real hit here at the editorial office!

KaffeFair Strandvejen

There are fastelavn buns, and then there are fastelavn buns you truly remember.

The latter definitely applies to KaffeFair.

Once again this year, KaffeFair on Strandvejen is ready with a selection that can make you forget both time and place – at least for a little while.

This year, they’re offering three varieties.

You can dig into the classic old-fashioned bun with custard, which simply tastes amazing.

If you want to go all in, try the Chocolate Marshmallow with a cinnamon roll base, chocolate, and salted caramel. The bun is filled with pastry cream and topped with toasted marshmallow.

For the more adventurous, there’s the Moon Milk.

This bun has a brioche base with chai spice, vanilla cream with chamomile and honey, lemon curd, and white chocolate cream, topped with chocolate and a little moon.
