Local pastries and handmade ceramics: Aalborg’s new coffee house is now open

Aalborg’s new coffee house is now officially open.

Ane Sund Katborg and her family are the minds behind Arnessted, which already exudes a cozy atmosphere and stylish decor even before opening.

“We probably won’t be completely finished, but as close as possible,” says Ane just before the opening, as the last baseboards are wiped down and a bit of tidying up is done after the morning rush.

“Otherwise, it’s turned out exactly as I had dreamed.”

Beautiful and thoughtful interior

Inside, visitors are greeted by olive-green walls, soft lighting, and green chairs that match the room down to the smallest detail.

The tables are solid oak, found by the family at auctions, and polished and oiled by Ane’s son to such an extent that it almost became a project within the project.

Warm-colored Bauhaus posters hang on the walls, and small black table lamps provide a gentle light that complements the cozy atmosphere.

Behind the bar, rows of handmade ceramic bowls in green and white from MK Keramik in Copenhagen are displayed, perfectly matching the green of the walls.

Pastries from Vejgaard Bakery

The pastries in the display case are supplied by none other than Vejgaard Bakery.

Until the oven is fully operational, the pastries arrive pre-baked, but the plan is for Arnessted to soon bake on-site using the bakery’s dough.

This morning, the signs were already set up for monkey bread, croissants, cinnamon buns, and rolls.

Coffee comes from Holy Bean, tea from Perch, and beverages range from Ebeltoft Brewery to Sigurd Müller—a small but carefully curated selection.

A project hands-on

Ane has many years of experience in the restaurant industry in Aarhus and also works part-time as a hospice chaplain.

The rest of her time will be devoted to the coffee house.

Her son Jacob is employed full-time, and eight staff members are ready from opening day.

The rest of the family has also been deeply involved: the son with the furniture, the daughter with the large white staircase leading to the first floor, and her spouse handling practical matters.

Going upstairs, the space opens into a calm, bright lounge with brown retro furniture, leather on the chairs, and a view over Aalborg’s rooftops.

A small morning crisis

Not everything went smoothly this morning. Ane realized her new slicer was missing.

“We slice our own cold cuts from Rævhede, so that wouldn’t do,” she says.

The solution came from Salling in Aalborg, which generously lent her their machine for free.

“I’m very grateful for that when you’re newly opened and there are little things beyond your control,” she says, relieved.

It now looks like Aalborg has a new coffee house just in time.

The opening reception takes place today from 12:00 to 15:00, with bubbles and snacks on offer.

The first 50 guests get coffee at half price.
