Italian coffee and delicious cakes: A two-floor coffee bar opens in Aalborg

by Shellie Boudreau

The large space that once occupied Baresso has been empty since March last year after the coffee shop was bought by Espresso House.

Now life will soon fill the two-floor premises located on the pedestrian street Bredegade in Aalborg’s city center.

A new coffee oasis, Kaffebaren, will soon be ready to serve up some good coffee and delicious cakes.

The middle of this busy pedestrian streets is a perfect location to offer high-quality coffee, cakes, and bread – something that the owners, Thomas and Thilde Nedergaard Kristiansen, prioritize.

Extensive experience in the restaurant business

Thomas Nedergaard Kristiansen has run nightclubs in Jomfru Ane Gade and holds years of experience in the restaurant industry. The same goes for his wife and partner. Now they are crossing over to coffee bars.

“Although we miss the restaurant industry we prefer not to return to evening and night work. So when a good location and opportunity opened up, there was no doubt that a coffee bar was the right option to fill these beautiful rooms,” Thomas Nedergaard Kristiansen explains to MyAalborg.

Of course, the team is not blind to the fact that Aalborg already is home to several excellent coffee houses.

For example, the coffee bar Behag Din Smag is just a short walk away from this location. It’s no secret they won the Coffee Bar of the Year two years in a row at AALBORG AWARDS.

Quality Italian coffee and delicious cakes

This new coffee bar will have its own style and offer some of the coziest rooms in Aalborg.

“We will serve good quality Italian coffee from Lavazza and an assortment of delicious cakes. There will also be tasty bread, sandwiches, warm paninis, and all that is expected from a traditional coffee bar.

But we try to do things our own way, which means the coffee bar is decorated as a cozy escape right in the middle of the busy street life.

We offer two floors of comfy seating, complete with a mix of chairs and sofas. Here guests can enjoy a cup of coffee and other goodies as they lounge,” Thomas Nedergaard Kristiansen explains.

Delays due to Corona

Naturally, he recognizes that the Corona-crisis makes opening a new coffee bar less than optimal, but the couple also sees benefits.

“Corona restrictions are not here forever. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and it was vital for us to find a suitable location that neighbors street traffic in the middle of Aalborg.

In fact, we were ready to open this week, but then came the new lockdowns in Northern Jutland and delayed everything.

Amongst other things, Råt & Godt delivers a lot of our furniture, and their production was hit hard by the lockdown,” the coffee-bar owner says.

“But we are determined to open before the New Year and hopefully, before Christmas. We are looking forward to unlocking our doors and revealing the cozy new coffee bar we put together.

Further, we can’t wait for the summer, as we have a large space for outdoor seating and lounging,” he concludes.
