Lively harborfront: Huge event will be even bigger in Aalborg this year

by Megan McPhee Christensen

More sports events than ever are planned for when the DM week (Danish Championship week) returns to Aalborg from the 22nd to 25th of June 2023.

Athletes from 35 sporting disciplines will be competing for more than 200 Danish championship titles. Nine sports are included for the first time this year – including beach volleyball, archery, and golf.

This summer, Aalborg will once again be bustling with sporting events all over the city. After its debut in 2022, Aalborg is hosting DM week for the second time.

This year, Denmark’s Radio (DR) is again broadcasting directly from the events here with several hours of TV and radio live from Aalborg.

All of this was announced in a press release.

Huge sports festival in Aalborg

“We are extremely happy that Aalborg will be the host city for DM week again in 2023.

The first DM week in Denmark was a great success last summer in Aalborg with experiences and inspiration for a wide audience.

Among other things, the sports moved out on the harborfront, out on the Limfjord and into Nordkraft, and it was a unique experience for both the athletes and the audience.

I am really proud that this year’s sports festival will be an even bigger version with as many as nine new sports,” Thomas Kastrup-Larsen, mayor of Aalborg Municipality, says.

Again in 2023, the harborfront in Aalborg will be the stage for the spectacular and festive championships where the spectators again can experience diving from the Limfjord Bridge.

Sand will be a key ingredient this year too as athletics once again allows spectators to get up close and personal with the long jump jumpers.

Beach volleyball on the harborfront

Beach volleyball is on the program for the first time this year and it will move in with a real beach party vibe.

“It is incredibly great that the Beach Volleyball Championship is coming to Aalborg for DM week.

It is great for us as a club to be involved and good for the sport to gain more exposure. I believe and hope that being part of the event can create positive awareness.

We know that many people play beach volleyball for fun during the summer, and we hope this event can increase the number of members. We look forward to helping create a party on the waterfront with beach volleyball.

I hope that we can help show the intensity of the sport and show the many tactical aspects of the game.

It is very audience-friendly,” Mads Peter Hilligsøe, chairman of Aalborg Beachvolley Klub, says.

The other eight new sports are archery, parachuting, golf, kickboxing, wheelchair soccer, petanque, shooting, and triathlon.

Facts about the DM week 2023:

+ 35 sports

+ 100 disciplines

+ 200 medal sets

+ 2,500 athletes and officials

31 special associations

Events at various hotspots in the city

The DM week crowns over 200 Danish champions and is a smorgasbord of sports spread across venues all over the city.

In addition to the harborfront and the Limfjord, many Danish championships are to be decided around Skansen in Nørresundby and the stadium area in Vestbyen.

The individual DM events are organised by the respective federations together with the local clubs, and this is of great importance for them:

“DM week is a fantastic showcase for both the individual sports and our local clubs.

I am impressed that so many clubs throw energy and voluntary efforts into creating some great atmospheres for the sports.

The feedback from last year is also that it helps the individual clubs and sports to develop as a result of them organizing and being part of such a large event. Likewise, it creates extra attention for everyone to be part of the DM week.

I’m really looking forward to getting around to the many arenas and can only encourage as many people as possible to note down the dates now – there are experiences for everyone,” Jes Lunde, councillor for Health and Culture in Aalborg Municipality, explains.
