Major changes for travel to Aalborg airport: Here’s the new plan
Starting in January 2026, all train services to Aalborg Airport will be transferred to DSB, and Nordjyllands Trafikselskab (NT) will no longer operate the train route.
It has always been part of the plan that NT would only operate a temporary train route to the airport, as DSB has not been able to facilitate more than one train per hour until now.
“We’ve done what we could. Clearly, what we are competing with are many bus departures and cheap parking at the airport. What’s a bit unique is that this is essentially the time when people are most concerned about being there on time. If you connect a train route to something that’s unstable, people will choose something else.
When we started operating, I hoped we could increase passenger numbers. We can run a little more smoothly than DSB. When you’re coming all the way from Copenhagen, there’s a higher risk of delays,” explains Martin Sort Mikkelsen, CEO of Nordjyske Jernbaner.
However, there will soon be more train departures to the airport. Starting in 2026, DSB will operate two trains per hour throughout the entire operational day, including weekends.
It was also recently decided that several of the regional bus routes to the airport will be discontinued.
Instead, Lindholm Station will be reinforced as a hub for travel to and from Aalborg Airport, with express buses added to the route.
“We’ll tie everything together by creating this hub, where you can reach Lindholm Station via express buses, and from there, connect to the airport via buses and trains,” explains Ole Schleemann, Director of Customers and Operations at NT.
Bus routes to be discontinued and Lindholm Station becomes hub
Starting in December 2025, bus routes 70 and 71 will be discontinued and replaced by express buses 970X and 971X.
From December 2025, trains, express buses, city bus line 13, and regional route 200 will stop at Lindholm Station, making it a central hub for travelers to and from Aalborg Airport.
Between the airport and Lindholm Station, city bus line 13 and trains will operate. At Lindholm Station, connections will be available to and from Vendsyssel, Han Herred, Thy, Mors, as well as Aalborg and points further south.
“The regional routes will be converted into express routes to have fewer stops and get passengers to their destination more quickly. We aim to create the most direct routes possible. Passengers traveling from Aalborg city center to the airport will now be covered by trains and city buses,” says Ole Schleemann, continuing:
“We’re tying everything together to provide more travel options.”
Route had a rough start
In the coming period, a larger marketing collaboration between NT, DSB, and Aalborg Airport will also kick off.
“The background is that a decision was made to establish a train connection between Aalborg Central Station and Aalborg Airport. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the route had a difficult start, and today, there is space for many more passengers on the route. Therefore, we’re going to expand our marketing efforts for the route and also raise awareness about transport options across Northern and Central Jutland,” says Nicolai Bernt Sørensen, Commercial Director at NT.
This includes plans to introduce more attractive ticket options targeted at air travelers.
“Aalborg Airport is also an overlooked hub. There’s potential to utilize the train route as a Park & Ride hub. Drivers can save both time and money by parking at Aalborg Airport and taking the train into Aalborg.
It only takes 10 minutes to travel by train from Aalborg Central Station to Aalborg Airport. There aren’t many places in the world where you can get from the city center to the airport in just 10 minutes by public transport,” explains Nicolai Bernt Sørensen.
