Traffic disruption ahead: Major roadworks hit Vesterbro in City Center
Last week, MigogAalborg reported that Aalborg Municipality would use the summer holiday period to replace the asphalt on Vesterbro.
Now, further details about the project have been released.
“Vesterbro is one of the busiest roads in Aalborg, and the heavy traffic has taken its toll on the asphalt. A new wearing course is now needed on this central stretch from Stengade to the Limfjord Bridge, including both traffic lanes and cycle paths,” the municipality stated in a press release.
As a result, bus routes will be diverted and motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians should expect detours while sections of the road are closed.
Before the new asphalt can be laid, the existing surface must be milled away. The project will also include the replacement and adjustment of drainage grates and utility covers, followed by the application of new road markings.
Vesterbro North (Limfjord Bridge to Borgergade)
From Sunday, 28 June at 6:00 AM until Monday, 29 June at 6:00 AM, Vesterbro will be completely closed between Borgergade and the Limfjord Bridge for all traffic.
Pedestrians and cyclists will be directed via Toldbodgade and Gammel Strandvej to access the bridge. Pedestrians may also use the staircase at Strandvejen 10.
Motorists are advised to use the Limfjord Tunnel instead, as the Limfjord Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic during this period.
Vesterbro South (Borgergade to Stengade)
From Monday, 29 June until Friday, 10 July, Vesterbro between Borgergade and Stengade will be closed to motorists and cyclists on weekdays from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Pedestrians will be directed to the pavement on the side where work is not taking place.
Access to the Limfjord Bridge will remain possible via Toldbodgade or through Borgergade and Vesterbro North, while traffic leaving the bridge will be directed via Gammel Strandvej.
Again, motorists are encouraged to use the Limfjord Tunnel whenever possible.
The road will remain open between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM, as well as throughout the weekend of 4–5 July.
To minimise disturbance for residents living along the route, the work will be carried out during daytime hours rather than overnight, avoiding noise from paving machinery and road rollers during the night.
Advance warning signs have already been installed to inform road users about the upcoming works.
Local businesses in Aalborg City have been notified regarding deliveries, and local upper secondary schools have also been informed in relation to graduation celebrations and student parade vehicles.
The municipality selected the summer holiday period because traffic volumes are lower, and the schedule has been planned so that it will not interfere with the upcoming The Tall Ships Races 2026.
