Help Aalborg Zoo: The little newborn orangutan needs a name
It’s one of the most touching stories of the year from Aalborg Zoo.
The orangutan Ruti recently became a mother, and although her baby had a difficult start in life, both mother and baby are now doing well.
But one important thing is still missing: a name for the little one.
That’s why Aalborg Zoo is now inviting the public to submit suggestions for what the baby orangutan should be named.
Clear rules for the name
“Our animals are not given names to humanize them, but to tell them apart and work with them as effectively as possible in our daily routines,” writes Aalborg Zoo in a Facebook post.
However, there are clear rules that the name suggestions must follow:
- The name must be short and easy to pronounce
- It must clearly stand out from the zoo’s other animal names
- It must relate to the species’ geography, habitat, zoology, or cultural history
- It must not be a human name, nickname, or something that could be misunderstood in other languages
Since orangutans originate from the rainforests of Borneo, Aalborg Zoo encourages suggestions rooted in the nature, culture, or language of the area—or names that reflect something special about the species.
Prize for the best ideas
To make participation even more appealing, Aalborg Zoo is giving away a total of 10 annual passes. The five best name suggestions will each be rewarded with two annual passes.
The final name will be chosen by zookeepers Trine and Kenneth and announced on Saturday, June 28. The winners will be notified directly.
