Just landed in Aalborg: We tried the new churros ice cream dessert
Here in Aalborg, many people probably associate the characteristic deep-fried churros with Rudolf’s Tivoli at Nytorv during the Christmas months.
With cold cheeks, Christmas lights in the streets – and as the world’s best excuse to eat soft serve ice cream in the middle of winter.
But for those of us who love churros, the sweet treat is simply far too good to belong to just one season.
And apparently, Sunset Boulevard feels the same way.
They have launched a new dessert where the crispy, deep-fried dough is accompanied by creamy soft serve ice cream and either caramel or chocolate sauce.
And of course, we had to try it.
Delicious ice cream, but…
The new Churro Deluxe Sundae comes in two varieties.
Both consist of soft serve ice cream made with real cream and a churro, while you can choose between caramel and chocolate sauce from Odense Marcipan on top.
But wait – already here, things go slightly wrong for us.
Because in our opinion, “churro” should never be singular …
Apart from that, the dessert looks really delicious.
And although we have gradually learned that pictures of food on a menu do not necessarily look like what you actually receive, that is actually the case here.
The dessert looks at least as inviting in real life as we had hoped.
And even more importantly:
It tastes good too, and the “churro” (is that really what you call it?) is crispy from one end to the other!
The soft serve ice cream, which we know from the classic sundae, is creamy and delicious, and both the caramel and chocolate sauce get a clear stamp of approval from us.
Together with the crispy churro, it works exactly as well as you could hope.
We just could have used one (two) more churros.
Especially because the rest of the dessert has to be eaten with a cardboard spoon – even if you are eating in the restaurant.
We are less enthusiastic about that.
Because there are very few things that are improved by being eaten with a cardboard spoon, and ice cream is not one of them.
On the other hand, the dessert itself is a hit.
It is pretty, festive, and a delicious way to upgrade a simple soft serve ice cream without necessarily feeling like you have eaten dessert for an entire week.
So our verdict is clear:
A really delicious little dessert – which we would very much have liked to see with one more churro.
Whether it is a good alternative to a whole cone filled with churros and ice cream probably depends mostly on whether you count calories.
We will choose “churros” in the plural every time.
But if the choice is between an ordinary soft serve ice cream and Sunset’s new variant, the churro is definitely a delicious upgrade.
