Music festival launches: New event hits Aalborg this weekend

If you thought the festival season in North Jutland only begins once the calendar officially says summer, think again.

Already from Friday, May 8, until Saturday, May 9, a brand-new music festival will take over the historic surroundings of Nordkraft in Aalborg.

The folk and country festival Shelter From The Storm will transform Nordkraft into a vibrant musical hub, and more than 75% of the tickets have already been sold.

The festival is organized by Skråen together with a broad range of Nordkraft’s cultural institutions, making it a unique collaboration where an entire cultural house joins forces to create one united festival experience.

“It’s the first time Nordkraft has created a festival together. Everyone in the building is involved, and we’re incredibly excited to show the people of Aalborg, North Jutland, and all of Europe what we can do,” says co-organizer Troels Højgaard Sørensen from Skråen to MigogAalborg.

More Than Just Concerts

This festival is not simply about moving from one stage to another.

Guests will be guided throughout the entire building and into spaces that are not normally used as concert venues.

There will be performances on the 13th floor overlooking the city, in specially designed theatrical settings, underground in rehearsal rooms, inside the cinema at Biffen Nordkraft — and even a small detour to the record store LakridsPizza on Nørregade.

“There are so many amazing venues. The festival is built around folk and country music, but we don’t limit ourselves to what those genres traditionally mean. We all come from different backgrounds and see the genres from several perspectives,” says Troels.

The festival takes its name from Bob Dylan’s song Shelter from the Storm — and that choice is far from accidental.

“If it rains, you’re sheltered. But the festival was also born during a troubled time with wars and unrest in the world. Here, we’re safe in our own little bubble. We’ve protected ourselves against wind, weather — and, well, the whole world,” Troels says with a laugh.

A Festival Hub in the Heart of the Building

The center of the festival will be Kedelhallen inside Nordkraft, which Troels believes will become one of the event’s greatest strengths.

“It’s a natural gathering point, with no more than 100 meters between all the concerts. It creates an intimate, cozy, and welcoming atmosphere. People don’t have to deal with too many distractions. The focus is on the music and the good vibes.”

Different bars around the venues will serve specialty beers, cocktails, and other treats throughout the festival.

The festival is also located right in the heart of the city.

Visitors can walk directly from a concert to tapas at Tapa Tapas or Italian specialties at Restaurant Azzurra, and for those staying overnight, Kompas Hotel Aalborg is just around the corner.

The festival is already attracting visitors from Belgium, Sweden, Norway, and Israel.

“There are many dedicated fans within this genre. We can definitely feel that.”

Four Artists You Shouldn’t Miss

The lineup includes names such as The Tallest Man On Earth, Langhorne Slim, Charlie Parr, and Dylan LeBlanc.

Although Troels is proud of the entire lineup, he still points out a few highlights that audiences should not miss.

For the first time ever, the influential YouTube channel Western AF will host its own curated festival stage — and it’s happening in Aalborg.

Four artists will perform on that stage, and Troels especially highlights Willi Carlisle.

“He really has something special. It’s pretty incredible that they chose to represent themselves at our festival.”

He also points to Will Varley, who has sold out shows in Aalborg multiple times.

“He’ll be here for the entire festival, performing three completely different concerts. That represents very well what this festival can also offer.”

And then there are the truly special formats: Allan Olsen in an immersive theatrical experience and Thomas Dybdahl performing an intimate rooftop concert for only a handful of guests.

The Beginning of Something Bigger

The team behind the festival already has a three-year plan in place.

The ambition is to establish Shelter From The Storm as a permanent cultural beacon in Aalborg — and potentially expand even further in the future.

“We can easily scale it up. Royal Stage can become even bigger in the coming years.”

But that also depends on local support.

“The better it goes, the better next year’s festival will become, and I can only encourage curious people from North Jutland to stop by and enjoy a great experience.”
