New initiative: Free transportation to all concerts and shows

When nearly 100,000 attendees arrive annually for cultural experiences at AKKC (Aalborg Congress & Culture Center), it is often by car.

AKKC, together with Nordjyllands Trafikselskab (NT) and Ticketmaster, has launched a new green initiative. AKKC will offer its cultural customers free public transportation on Nordjyske Jernbaner’s blue trains and NT’s buses, regardless of where they live in North Jutland.

“AKKC has been a leader in sustainability within the cultural and concert industry for several years.

We have long focused on minimizing the CO2 emissions from the hundreds of thousands of guests who choose to drive to Aalborg and AKKC every year.

We know that changing consumer behavior is one of the hardest things to do, and it takes time.

With this pilot project, we will remind our cultural customers throughout the year about the option of taking free trains and buses as part of the joint project ‘Together for a Greener Culture’,” Susanne Kabel, project manager at AKKC, says.

Heading to Aalborg by train and bus

In the coming year, when you have a ticket for a cultural event at AKKC, you can use a unique code to get a free ticket from NTBillet.dk and head to Aalborg, whether you’re coming from Skagen or Storvorde.

The tickets are valid several hours before the show, giving you plenty of time to arrive and return home comfortably.

“From NT’s perspective, we have joined the development of this business-to-business project because our most important task is to support as strong public transportation in North Jutland as possible.

And the fact that AKKC attracts nearly 100,000 cultural customers annually is a volume that can really make a difference if we succeed in shifting some cultural audiences to trains and buses,” Sarah Guldhammer, marketing manager and team leader in Marketing and Communication at NT, emphasizes.

AKKC, NT, and Ticketmaster hope this pilot project will demonstrate how to shift the highly CO2-intensive private transport to a more relaxing and green public transport, where no one has to worry about driving or finding a parking space near AKKC—while also sparing the climate from significant CO2 emissions.

Everyone contributes

From now on, and throughout the initial one-year project, when you purchase a ticket for a cultural event at AKKC, AKKC will add a small transportation fee of 7 DKK to all tickets.

This draws on the strong Danish sense of community, where everyone contributes to reducing CO2 emissions by encouraging some attendees to opt for free train and bus rides instead of driving. Thus, everyone supports the initiative.

The Danish cultural sector, like the rest of society, is working to create more sustainable solutions for the future.

“We are proud to be part of AKKC’s green initiative. It is a fantastic opportunity to support sustainability, and we look forward to following this great pilot project—to guide AKKC in the process, contribute with our knowledge, and spread the good message,” Rikke Vestergaard, Ticketmaster Head of Business & Operations, says.

‘Together for a Greener Culture in North Jutland’ is the first initiative of its kind on this scale in Denmark, and it will be exciting to see how ready the people of North Jutland are to leave their cars behind. But let’s see—it’s free to use, and that’s a price all North Jutlanders usually like.
