New hot spot: Japanese BBQ concept ready to open in city center
At Boulevarden 8, Jan Shu and his team are getting ready to open the Japanese restaurant Sekiryu.
In 2023, he opened AI Japan, offering a delicious selection of Japanese specialties like sushi, ramen, takoyaki, and yakiniku. Now, he’s back with something new and exciting.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 13th, Sekiryu will open its doors after a major renovation of the premises formerly occupied by Carl’s JR.
We stopped by ahead of the opening.

Jan Shu has always had a deep love for Japanese culture and opened his first Japanese restaurant in 2008.
Now it’s time to truly introduce the people of Aalborg to the Japanese kitchen through the BBQ concept yakiniku.

Grill your own food at the table
So, what is this yakiniku concept about?
In short, it’s a BBQ concept where you grill meat, fish, and vegetables yourself on a grill located in the middle of the table.
Besides the unique BBQ concept, the restaurant will also offer monthly menus – all based on traditional Japanese cuisine.
“That way, our guests will always experience new and exciting dishes in the restaurant. As an extra, we’ll also have a ‘secret’ menu item that can only be experienced when visiting us,” says Jan Shu.

But it won’t be all BBQ.
Of course, there will also be sushi on the menu, where you can either choose a set number of pieces or, just like in the yakiniku concept, go all-in on the entire menu.
If there’s one thing we Northerners know, it’s all-you-can-eat. So many will be happy to hear that at Sekiryu you pay a fixed price and then can grill and eat as much as you want.
Check out the menu and learn more about the concept on their website.
Classic cocktails with a Japanese twist
The bar will also enhance the Japanese vibe.
On the shelves you’ll find everything from Japanese gin and sake to award-winning Japanese whisky.

At Sekiryu, you can look forward to signature cocktails and classic drinks with a Japanese twist.
Mocktails will also be available, so everyone at the table can enjoy delicious drinks. If you prefer soda or beer, of course that’s also an option.
Besides the restaurant, Jan Shu also plans to make it possible to drop by in the evenings just for a drink and a snack.

Sekiryu opens to guests tomorrow at 11 AM. The kitchen hours will be 11 AM–10 PM Sunday to Thursday, and 11 AM–11 PM Friday and Saturday.
Jan Shu tells us the first three opening days are already fully booked. For the first two weeks after opening, bookings will be required, after which they will open up for walk-ins.
You’re always welcome to stop by and satisfy your curiosity, the owner adds.
You can also follow the restaurant on Instagram.
