All You Can Eat: Brilliant smørrebrød concept opening soon

by Lucas Qureshi

Some might call it all you can eat.

But when you run a business focused on classic Danish smørrebrød – without any twist – like Koch’ens Køkken in Reberbansgade proudly claims, it’s called a self-serve buffet, says Charlotte Koch, who runs the eatery together with Klaus Koch.

Here at the editorial office, we’re fans, no matter what you call it.

Koch’ens Køkken opened its doors in November last year with a takeaway concept and a few tables in the small venue.

Now they’re hard at work preparing a second location at Holbergsgade 24 – right on the corner of Reberbansgade and Holbergsgade, where a clothing store used to be.

Charlotte Koch expects to seat 40 guests there, and this is where the new self-serve buffet concept will come to life.

Takeaway will continue from the current location, where the kitchen will produce delicious smørrebrød for both spots.

If all goes well, you’ll be able to dive into the big self-serve buffet for the first time during June.

“We hope to be ready in three to four weeks, if nothing causes delays,” says Charlotte Koch.

Cramped for space

After a fantastic start with Koch’ens Køkken, the couple has long wanted to add a location with more space.

“We’ve been received really well. The response has been great, and we’ve only received five-star reviews, so it’s been everything we could have dreamed of,” she explains.

“We’ve been a bit cramped for table space for a while. Sales have been good, but not having more seating has been a limitation,” says Charlotte Koch, who was quick to act when the liquor license, which they had been waiting for since December, finally arrived last Monday.

“We’ve been eager to get the license in place, as it was crucial for bringing our plans to life. When you serve smørrebrød, you’d also like to be able to serve a beer alongside,” she notes.

Test run on Sunday

Whether the new location will be called “Koch’ens Restaurant” or “Koch’ens Café” hasn’t been decided yet.

But the concept is clear: All the open-faced sandwiches you can eat within 2.5 hours for the tidy sum of 179 kroner, and the place will be open Thursday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

“We want to test opening on Sundays. Not many do that, and we believe a round of open-faced sandwiches on a Sunday will be very appealing to many,” says Charlotte Koch, who besides open-faced sandwiches will also tempt guests with delicious coffee and cream puffs from Thy.
