Inspired by Venice Beach: A brand-new streetball court is coming to Aalborg

Vestre Fjordpark is – and remains – one of the city’s biggest attractions.
In the 65,000-square-meter park, you can jump into the blue waves, go canoeing or kayaking, windsurf, paddleboard, play volleyball, barbecue, enjoy the playground – or simply take a relaxing walk through the beautiful area.
And soon, there will be even more to do.
When summer arrives in Aalborg, a completely new and unique street basketball court will be ready in the park.
The new facility will feature two 3×3 courts inspired by the waves of the Limfjord, a children’s hoop, a wooden grandstand, and several seating areas.
Streetball Aalborg, in collaboration with Aalborg Vikings Basketball, has been working on the project for several years, and the excitement is palpable.
“It’s absolutely fantastic! We’re seeing growing interest in streetball in Aalborg, and since we launched the large streetball project on the waterfront in May 2023 with new courts and facilities, we’ve been working to create another place where both young and old can enjoy this popular sport,” says Magnus Kolind, founder and volunteer at Streetball Aalborg.

A new landmark in Aalborg
The project is intended as a new landmark for the city, and the preliminary design is inspired by well-known Aalborg symbols such as the Aalborg Tower, the Limfjord, and the Cimbrer Bull.
“We’ve been very inspired by the court at Venice Beach in Los Angeles, and the courts will of course be 100 percent accessible to everyone, so as many people as possible can enjoy them,” explains Magnus.

3×3 basketball is rapidly growing in popularity and is both part of the Olympic program and a permanent feature of Denmark’s own ‘mini-Olympics,’ DM Week, where 3×3 basketball has been among the biggest crowd attractions.
“We’ll be hosting lots of great events for all ages and skill levels, and we’re really looking forward to having yet another place where people can have fun and get their pulse up with the best view of the Limfjord.”
The project has now been put out to tender by Aalborg Municipality, which means the visualizations shown may differ slightly from the final result.

Once a contractor has been selected, the plan is to begin construction in the spring, followed by an official opening in the summer, right in the peak season for streetball.
The entire project will cover approximately 750 square meters of recreational space, with room for two 3×3 courts, a grandstand, and much more.
The project is supported by the AN-TV Foundation, the Association Pool at DIF and DGI, Aalborg Municipality, and the Spar Nord Foundation.
