Love for Spain: Robert and Melanie have opened an authentic tapas bar in Aalborg

by Christopher Høeg Lundberg

In the intimate and cozy premises that previously housed Restaurant Rustik, you can now get a little taste of Spain.

The tapas bar ‘TapaTapas’ aims to be Aalborg’s go-to place when you’re craving a dose of Spanish atmosphere – and especially Spanish flavors.

The couple behind it are Robert Strøm and Melanie Neider, who have been serving up Manchego and chorizo since their opening a month ago.

“The right flavor and the right ingredients are important. We’ve worked hard to find the best ingredients, but it’s starting to pay off. You should be able to feel that we’ve spent time finding the authentic Spanish tastes,” the owners explain.

We stopped by to sample the delights.

A huge love for Spain

The couple’s fondness for Spanish cuisine – and especially the Spanish lifestyle – made it almost inevitable for them to open a tapas bar in Aalborg.

“The second-best location when it couldn’t be in Spain,” Robert Strøm smiles.

“The reason we chose this location is because the building is a bit quirky and fun, and that’s pretty cool,” he says.

Even though they’ve only been open for about a month, they’re already experiencing how word of mouth is spreading. Many guests also stop by after a movie or a concert.

Simple concept

At TapaTapas, you can choose between a tapas board for 125 DKK per person, a 7-course tapas menu for 225 DKK per person, or a 10-course tapas menu for 350 DKK per person.

Melanie Neider emphasizes that although they have set menus, it’s always possible to request your favorite combination.

We tried the 7-course option, which included bacon-wrapped dates, chorizo with olives, Manchego cheese with honey and pistachios, Padrón peppers, fried potatoes with aioli, garlic shrimp, and grilled chorizo.

It was clear from the beginning that Robert and Melanie have chosen high-quality ingredients – you won’t find this kind of tapas in your local supermarket.

The various flavors stood out in every dish, and we quickly agreed that it’s easy to overindulge in this delicious southern European cuisine.

“We’re not here to compete with any of the city’s many great restaurants, we just want to be a casual place with a focus on rustic Spanish food,” they explain.

To top it off, you can wash it all down with a glass of real Spanish beer – TapaTapas has Estrella on tap. If you prefer bubbles, they’ve also got Spanish sparkling wine, Cava, in stock.

TapaTapas is open Wednesday to Saturday from midday to around 9 PM – but they’re very flexible with opening hours because they know you have to be when located in Nordkraft.

“We hope people will also feel like just sitting down to enjoy a snack and a beer. It doesn’t have to be a big meal every time. We want it to be a relaxed place with a great vibe,” Robert Strøm and Melanie Neider conclude.
