Parking in city center: Aalborg issues fines worth millions on special rule

Aalborg’s motorists increasingly have to pay up for parking too close to an intersection.

In four years, the municipality’s income from the so-called 10-meter rule has risen from 2.8 to 4.38 million kroner.

That is the trend in Aalborg, Odense and Aarhus. TV 2 writes that.

“You have a clear advantage if you are a surveyor and have to park.

And very few are, so therefore it looks pretty bad,” says Torben Lund Kudsk, political chief at FDM, to TV 2.

Will not make further signage

Where Aalborg Municipality in 2021 earned 2.8 million kroner on the 10-meter rule, the number last year was 4.3 million.

For Aarhus Municipality it has gone from 3.3 million to 6 million in the same period.

In other words, the municipalities collect a lot of money on the 10-meter rule, which according to FDM can be difficult for motorists to figure out.

It is up to each municipality whether they want to mark the ten meters with a yellow triangle, a so-called service marking.

That is done, among others, in Copenhagen Municipality, and here the number of fines on the 10-meter rule is falling.

But in Aalborg Municipality they do not mark the 10 meters with yellow triangles.

Is nonsense

The municipality rejects with reference to expenses, snow and leaves on the roads as well as fewer parking spaces if you measure precisely.

“It is also Aalborg Municipality’s experience that many municipalities that use the yellow triangles are not consistent,” writes Aalborg Municipality in a written reply to TV 2.

And that creates, according to the municipality, an “inappropriate confusion for motorists” that the markings are found some places while they do not exist other places.

“It is nonsense. It is a bad excuse for not wanting the hassle with this,” says Torben Lund Kudsk to TV 2.

The number of fines in Aalborg on exactly the 10-meter rule has risen from 5,590 in 2020 to 8,590 in 2024. Each fine costs 510 kroner.
