Making it easier to get around Aalborg: Road bans are now being lifted

by Michael Qureshi

City and Country in Aalborg Municipality are currently busy removing a number of traffic restrictions in the Mid- and West City areas.

This follows decisions made by the City and Landscape Committee on February 13 and June 19, 2025, where it was decided to remove a number of restrictions that were introduced, among other things, after the establishment of the Plusbus.

After the political decisions, marking plans were created for all the changes, which were then sent to the police for approval. The first restrictions were already lifted at the beginning of the summer holidays.

Specifically, the changes involve restrictions such as turn bans, one-way streets, entry bans, etc. The goal is to improve traffic flow for drivers.

Avoiding detours

In the West City area, several changes have already been made, including the removal of the former left-turn ban from Tordenskjoldsgade, Niels Juels Gade, and Cort Adelers Gade onto Kastetvej.

This change helps ensure that residents on these streets avoid up to 0.5 km of detours or 180-degree turns on very narrow roads due to parallel parking on both sides.

In addition, the one-way direction on Kastetvej from Dannebrogsgade toward Absalonsgade has been removed, meaning drivers no longer need to make detours through narrow residential streets. And on Jyllandsgade in the city center, the right-turn ban onto Niels Ebbesens Gade has been removed, making it easier for drivers to access the city center.

The removal of these restrictions is meant to make it easier to get around the affected areas by car.

Changes in Vingårdsgade

Last week, the final changes involving only signage updates were carried out, but the changes to restrictions in Vingårdsgade and Brandstrupsgade are still pending, such as the entry ban for motor vehicles in Brandstrupsgade.

The signs on Vingårdsgade – from Vesterbro to Budolfi Plads – will be removed in week 38, while the sign in Jernbanegade indicating a vehicle length limit is expected to be installed in week 42.

The same applies to signage in the Vingårdsgade/Boulevarden/Brandstrupsgade intersection.

Boulevarden has a special surface that requires custom posts with long delivery times, which has delayed this part of the work.

Awaiting police approval

The change to the one-way direction in Rosenlundsgade is still awaiting police approval.

Finally, there are changes requiring separate funding, such as the Danmarksgade/Jernbanegade intersection.

Here, road markings must be changed, and the traffic signal system must be reprogrammed — the latter being an external order.

The change to the right-turn ban from Kastetvej to Cort Adelers Gade, Niels Juels Gade, and Tordenskjoldsgade, which requires physical adjustments, also needs separate funding.

But an overview now shows that the finances can remain within the existing budget, and the execution of these projects has therefore been ordered.
