Summer fun for the whole family: Five fun activities you can try in Aalborg
Summer is upon us, and that means time to relax and have fun with family.
But what exactly should we do for fun? Is there even anything happening in Aalborg on these warm summer days?
Yes! We can definitely promise that there are things going on and that’s why we’ve put together this little guide for all the families out there, highlighting fun and different experiences right in our own backyard.
You can, among other things, sleep with the animals at the zoo, explore the city’s newest playgrounds, learn to use a SUP board, and experience the Utzon Center’s children’s exhibition.
Sleep with the animals on the savannah
A night on the savannah has always been one of Aalborg Zoo’s major attractions.
Due to Corona, there have been very few of these types of events, but now the time has finally come.
On Friday the 20th of August and Saturday the 21st of August, it is again possible to experience the nighttime atmosphere of the Zoo when the animals go to rest and the lion purrs goodnight.
There is the possibility to purchase food in Spisestedet Skovbakken or grill food you’ve brought along on the grills at the Zoo. Skovbakken is open until 21:00.
You bring your own tent and sleeping bag for the night but the Zoo provides bonfires and various activities in the gardens throughout the evening, as well as a goodnight story before everyone lays down to rest in their tents.

Explore two brand new playgrounds
Despite a quickly growing iPad generation, there’s still nothing quite like a trip to the playground.
Aalborg Municipality is well aware of that, and hence sets aside a fair amount of money each year to build and maintain the public playgrounds.
This year, two new playgrounds in Sohngårdsholmparken and Mølleparken have been build where both big and small kids can wear themselves out on the many play elements.
Both playgrounds have something for the larger and smaller kids with various things to climb, spin, slide, and swing on.
There are also sandpits, rocking animals, cubby houses, and Tarzan courses.

Try a SUP tour
If you’re a real water lover then spend your summer days out on the water with Wayve; a newly started SUP and kayak club right beside Aalborg Streetfood.
Here you can take a course in how to paddle on the extremely popular SUPs and sea kayaks, so you can safely spend the entire summer on the water. Through ClubAalborg you get 20% off all their courses, all of which are lead by professional instructors.
When you feel secure enough to explore on the SUP or kayak on your own then you can loan their equipment as a member of the club and thus avoid needing to invest in all the expensive wetsuits and boards yourself.
As they are the only SUP/kayak club in Aalborg that doesn’t have long waiting lists, we are certain that Wayve will be the place to be this summer.
Children’s exhibition at Utzon
Until now, we have suggested a lot of good outdoor activities, but we know that Danish weather can quite often be a little wet.
If that’s the case, then you can head indoors to the Utzon Center, which has put children in the spotlight this summer. In fact, there are several things you can do with the kids on your visit.
Children’s exhibition: Mini Maxi
In this exhibition, Utzon messes with the scale when it comes to things that are usually designed based on the body’s proportions. Here you’ll, for example, find chairs that are too big and bowls that are too small, and a lamp that is just way too large.
“You experience a universe where we dive down into the story behind good design and the understanding of scale. Where the whole family can also solve creative puzzles and let their imagination run wild,” Utzon writes about the exhibition.

Free build: Lego, Minecraft, and virtual reality
Here is where the children get to play architects; they are allowed to build sculptures in Lego that can be scanned into Minecraft and that they can then experience in virtual reality.
It is free for everyone with a ticket to the exhibition.

Architecture with a chalk machine
This workshop is for the whole family and will definitely get you sweating. Here you are allowed to draw outside on the grass in Utzon Park by driving around a huge chalk machine.
It is free for all with no registration required.

Travel to Spain
Right now, the Utzon Center has an exhibition called With Love From Spain. When you visit the exhibition, you can purchase a tour guide that takes you all around Spain.
You get a lot of tasks along the way about everything from color to connection, and thus you’ll also learn a heap about architecture – but first and foremost you’ll have a lot of fun.

Come on a treasure hunt with prizes
With a guide full of exciting activities and events, it’d be a shame if we didn’t give a little plug for our own event.
MigogAalborg/MyAalborg has partnered with Aalborg City to host The Great Treasure Hunt in collaboration with the city’s shops, restaurants, and cafes.
The treasure hunt has already been held thrice, but if you haven’t managed to participate yet, there’s still another chance. The remaining treasure hunt will take place on Wednesday the 4th of August from 10:00 to 14:00.
The treasure hunt is for both adults and kids of all ages and promises some good clean hours of fun in the city. On top of that, we have put together some fantastic prizes from places such as Aalborg Zoo, Salling, Normal, Lagkagehuset, and many more.
It is free to participate.
