The big guide: Here’s where to celebrate Sankt Hans in Aalborg

by Simone Springborg

Midsummer’s Eve is just around the corner and falls on Monday, June 23 this year.

Sankt Hans is tied to cozy traditions that few want to miss, and in Aalborg there are several places to celebrate the midsummer evening with everything that belongs to it.

We’ve gathered an overview of the Sankt Hans events we’ve found so far – and we’ll keep updating the guide.

Sankt Hans in Fjordbyen

In what is perhaps Aalborg’s coziest oasis, there’s once again an open invitation to join in the Sankt Hans festivities.

This year, as in previous years, a fantastic wooden artwork will top the bonfire. However, the large wooden sculpture will be built at Nordkraft this time around.

Sankt Hans at Musikkens Plads

As tradition dictates, you can celebrate Sankt Hans at Musikkens Plads.

Here, Midsummer’s Eve is marked with communal singing and live music.

This year, Aalborg’s mayor, Lasse Frimand Jensen, will deliver the official speech, while the musical lineup includes Carl Emil, Signe Olsen, and a group of brass musicians from the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra.

Something extra special this year: DM Week will also be present at Musikkens Plads, offering fun activities like panna football, pickleball, and long jump.

Volunteers from DM Week will be on site from 5 PM to engage the crowd. The official program begins at 6:30 PM with bar service, and at 7 PM, Signe Olsen kicks off the music.

Just after 8 PM, two choirs will join the square for a sing-along with the audience, accompanied by 11 brass players from the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra. Following the bonfire speech, the lighting of the bonfire, and the traditional “Midsommervisen,” Carl Emil takes the stage at 8:40 PM.

The event is free and open to all.

Sankt Hans Celebration at Stigsborg Brygge

As per tradition, Stigsborg invites everyone to a Sankt Hans celebration when the cozy midsummer event is held on Monday, June 23.

The program features music and entertainment by Popsi and Krelle, a bonfire speech by alderman Jan Nymark Rose Thaysen, fun family activities, and – of course – the lighting of the bonfire by the Nørresundby Scouts.

Popsi and Krelle are beloved by children and playful souls alike.

They perform kid-friendly music with new versions of classics like “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Thumbkin, Thumbkin, Where Are You?”

In addition to the classics, Popsi and Krelle are known for original songs like “Stand Up and Sit Down” and “Thanks for Today.”

Sankt Hans at Stigsborg – June 23, 2025

4:00 PM: The venue opens with activities hosted by the Nørresundby Scouts and Nørresundby Church, along with food sales by NFB
5:30 PM: Entertainment by Popsi and Krelle
6:00 PM: Bonfire speech by alderman Jan Nymark Thaysen
6:15 PM: “Midsommervisen” sing-along with Popsi and Krelle
6:20 PM: The bonfire is lit by the Nørresundby Scouts
7:00 PM: The event ends

The Sankt Hans celebration takes place at Stigsborg Brygge 5 (by the fjord). Admission is free.

Sankt Hans at Aalborg Streetfood

At Aalborg Streetfood, you can enjoy bonfires, food, and live music in a relaxed atmosphere – completely free of charge.

From 4:00 PM, there will be children’s activities such as roasting marshmallows over the fire, face painting, and a creative drawing corner.

The bouncy castle will be available all day, and at 6:00 PM Marc Roland will perform live with all the biggest Kim Larsen and Shubidua hits – perfect for sing-alongs and a great vibe.

Sankt Hans Evening in Mølleparken

The event in Mølleparken is probably the largest Sankt Hans celebration in the Aalborg area.

Bring your family and friends to this major midsummer event at the top of Aalborg.

Festivities begin at 6:00 PM.

With the beautiful view and hopefully sunny skies as a backdrop, you can enjoy grilled food from Slagter Stiller, drinks from the stalls, cakes from Gudbageren Kastetvej, and live music.

Sankt Hans at Lindholm Høje

For years, the Viking burial site at Lindholm Høje has been one of North Jutland’s most atmospheric spots to celebrate Sankt Hans, with the bonfire glowing under the light midsummer sky.

This year’s bonfire speaker is author Johannes Andersen. He’ll be joined by the chamber choir Coro Misto, who will lead the traditional “Midsommervisen.”

The Sankt Hans celebration is free, and entry to the Viking museum is also free from 3:00 PM. Free guided tours will take place at 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM.

No midsummer evening would be complete without a proper meal. This year’s menu, crafted by Camillo’s Kitchen, includes:

  • Focaccia with tomatoes, olives & artichoke
  • Merluzzo in Agrodolce (white fish in sweet-and-sour herb sauce)
  • Sicilian lemon chicken
  • Tiramisu with rhubarb & strawberries

Includes welcome drink and two glasses of wine/beer/water.

Program for Sankt Hans Evening at Lindholm Høje

4:00–5:15 PM: Author talk with writer Johannes Andersen – requires a separate ticket (purchase via ordkraft.dk)
4:30 & 5:30 PM: Guided tours of the ancient site Lindholm Høje (free)
5:30–8:30 PM: Dinner at the café by Camillo’s Kitchen – purchase food ticket here
9:00 PM: Bonfire speech by Johannes Andersen. “Midsommervisen” will be sung with chamber choir Coro Misto, conducted by Søren Birch (free). The bonfire will be lit.

Based on previous years’ experience, it’s recommended to arrive early and bring a blanket for the evening dew and cozy Danish summer atmosphere.

Sankt Hans at Signalbakken

5.A from Vejgaard Østre Skole invites you to celebrate Sankt Hans in the ravine at Signalbakken, with a view over Aalborg.

Bring the whole family and enjoy the midsummer evening under the open sky, where children can play on the hill and in the forest.

Vejgaard Østre Skole offers free twist bread for everyone – sponsored by SuperBrugsen in Vejgaard. Popcorn, candy, coffee/tea, cake, and cold drinks will be sold at reasonable prices.

Payment by cash or MobilePay.

This year, local musician Sam Brown will join and sing the Midsummer Song with the attendees.

PROGRAM:
5:30 PM: Fire pits are lit – ready for children to roast twist bread.

7:00 PM: The bonfire is lit, and the witch – made by the students of 5.A – is sent to Bloksbjerg. The Midsummer Song is sung together with Sam Brown (plus a few other songs the children know).

8:30 PM: Thank you for tonight.

The Little Sankt Hans Celebration at Vor Frelser Church

This year, Vor Frelser Church is trying something new and invites you to a cozy little Sankt Hans celebration in the parsonage garden.

Bring your picnic blanket and basket— the church will have the grills lit and ready from 6:00 PM.

Beer, soft drinks, coffee, and cake will be available for purchase, and both children and adults can enjoy gathering around fire pits to make twist bread and roast marshmallows.

The Sankt Hans bonfire will be lit at 7:30 PM, followed by some cozy communal singing around the fire, musical performances, and of course, a bonfire speech.

Tonight’s bonfire speaker is Soffi Mari Army Pank.
Soffi is a radio host, podcaster, and one of the well-known voices and faces of Vestbyen, always sharing thoughtful reflections on our times.

The little Sankt Hans celebration takes place in the parsonage garden at Annebergvej 4—right next to the church.
