The ultimate ice cream guide: Here you’ll find the best ice cream downtown
Can it be summer in Denmark without one, two, or three ice creams a day?
There are so many terrific flavors and scoop sizes – and we love them all.
Fortunately, there are many places in Aalborg to buy ice cream, but if you want to try the best of the best then check out the list we compiled with shops you MUST visit before summer ends.
All prices are listed for two scoops of ice cream in a cup or waffle to keep it simple. The shops listed offer ice cream in several varieties ranging from the classic ice cream cone to shakes, ice coffee, and soft ice.
Enjoy! Here is an updated list of the best ice cream in Aalborgs’ city center:
Haals is
One of the city’s newest ice cream shops is Haals Is on Urbansgade 21.
Perhaps you tasted ice cream from their ice cream bike or at Haals bakery in Gistrup or Klarup? Now, Haals has opened a new shop dedicated to serving one of the best ice creams in Aalborg.
Haals’ ice cream is practically made from scratch. The sorbet, for example, is made with 50% fruit and chocolate from Belgium.
Haals Is places emphasis on quality and varies the selection of ice cream.
Since Haals is the newcomer, we thought to order the Haals Special with four ice cream scoops, soft ice, guf (gooey marshmallow topping), a cookie, and homemade flødebolle (marshmallow puff cookie) for a complete experience.
“Luckily”, we timed it right so the newest trainee in the shop got to make her very first “Special” for us. She made it perfectly and filled our waffle with peppermint, licorice, Daim, and caramel ice cream scoops.
The cone was full of flavor. Large Daim pieces filled the Daim ice cream, and the licorice ice cream had tasty, crunchy licorice bits. The peppermint ice cream was minty.
All the flavors are indeed works of craftsmanship.
When we visited the newcomer Haals Is, we could choose from the following flavors:
Peppermint, Pistachio, Caramel, Licorice, Blackcurrant Dream, Strawberry dream, Daim, and Chocolate
What: Haals is
Where: Urbansgade 21
Price: 2 scoops in a cup/waffle for 38 kr (includes choice of guf and flødebolle)

IsVærftet
Another new ice cream shop in Aalborg – known as IsVærftet – opened in the new Stjernepladsen in Østre Havn.
We highly recommend swinging by Stjernepladsen where there’s a lot to see and taste.
IsVærftet focuses on the legendary Ryå ice cream, which stems from an area near Aabybro.
The new shop has had an amazing start, and you know it’s fully earned as soon as you try their selection that ranges from several types of Ryå ice cream to different ice coffees.
The taste of their buttermilk soft ice is commendable and resembles a delightful bowl of koldskål (Danish cold buttermilk soup).
At IsVærftet, you can also get the classic Danish cookies for koldskål known as ‘kammerjunker’ as a topping for a complete frosty experience.
The following flavours were available when we visited IsVærftet:
Hazelnut, Vanilla, Rhubarb, Nougat, Marzipan, Choco Cocoa, Blueberry, Strawberry, Stracciatella, Licorice, Banana, Salted Caramel, Choco Mint, Choco Orange, Mocca, Blackcurrant, Orange
What: IsVærftet

Is à Bella
On the first floor of Magasin, there is a hidden gem known as Is à Bella. This gem makes and sells Italian ice cream from a recipe nearing 100 years in collaboration with a shop located in North Italy.
The shop’s goods are made exclusively from fine raw ingredients of the highest quality. Their ice cream is for example made from organic Thisemælk milk and sugar. The rest of the natural ingredients are imported from their Italian partners.
At Is à Bella, your taste buds will awaken and if you dare, try some adventurous flavors.
We could not pass up the experience to taste the colorful candyfloss flavor that transported us to the amusement parks of our youth. The candyfloss flavor had a hint of our favorite chocolate milk…another happy memory.
The following flavors were available upon our visit to Is à Bella:
Vanilla, M&M’s, Candyfloss, Watermelon, Pineapple, Raspberry, Blood Orange, Italian Nougat, Coffee, Oreo, Matilde Cocoa, Dark Chocolate, Organic Koldskål (buttermilk)
What: Is à Bella
Where: Magasin
Price: 2 scoops in a cup/waffle for 35 kr

Guf & Kugler
The ice cream guide would not be complete without Guf & Kugler, which has taken Aalborg by storm since its debut in 2018.
Their motto is “We indulge your ice cream,” and that is what they do. You are always offered homemade guf (vanilla or licorice) and candy crumbs on your ice cream, and most importantly, service with a smile.
The ice cream is made from the best dairies in Denmark; from Vebbestrup Ismejeri to Kastbergs in Silkeborg. Hand-stirred, the ice cream is made with organic milk and cream and the sorbet with fresh fruit.
During our visit, we succumbed to temptation and ordered the new summer flavor Københavnerstang (vanilla-like exotic flavor), which was dangerously good, especially when paired with the fresh strawberry sorbet.
One important detail about Guf & Kugler is that the scoops are slightly bigger than other places. So quality AND quantity.
The following flavors we could choose from when visiting Guf & Kugler:
Strawberry, Chocolate, Organic Vanilla, Smarties, Stracciatella, Coffee, Pistachio, Hazelnut, Blackcurrant Dream, Salted Caramel, Coconut, Licorice, Banana Split, Zuppa, Chocolate Licorice, Orange Sorbet, Raspberry Sorbet, Rhubarb Sorbet, Mint, Blueberry, Københavnerstang (Vanilla-like exotic flavour), Hyldeblomstsorbet.
What: Guf & Kugler
Where: Slotsgade
Price: 2 scoops of bowl/waffle for 38 kr

Paradis
In 2000, Paradis opened its first store in Aarhus and earned its reputation as one of Denmark’s favorites. They serve frozen treats to feed a warm summer soul.
Every morning Paradis makes fresh ice cream from some of the finest ingredients.
Paradis for many North Jutnalanders is a little taste of … paradise worth sharing. Perhaps this is why Paradis opened four stores in the city, which can be found at Algade, Reberbansgade, Aalborg Havn or Harbour, and Aalborg Storcenter.
We visited the one on Algade this July and tried their newest flavor, Virgin Mojito, which lived up to its name.
In addition, there was also a fresh vegan Mango ice cream. Of course, we could not leave without trying the Skildpadde flavor (famous chocolate-covered caramel-shaped turtles by TOMs chocolates). We noticed a salted caramel fudge, too. Damn, ice cream is good!
The following flavors were available when we visited Paradis:
Licorice, Mint with Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Skildpadde (chocolate caramel), Passion Fruit, Stracciatella, Mango, Elderflower, Oreo, Coffee Chocolate Caramel, Amarena Chocolate, Virgin Mojito, Salt Caramel Fudge, Chocolate, Hazelnut.
What: Paradis
Where: Algade, Reberbansgade, Aalborg Havn (and Aalborg Storcenter)
Price: 2 scoops in bowl/waffle for 35 kr
