Traffic alert: DM-ugen closes Limfjordsbroen during rush hour
If you plan to cross the Limfjord on Friday, June 27 or Sunday, June 29, it’s a good idea to consider alternatives to the Limfjords Bridge.
As part of DM Week, the Danish National Road Cycling Championships – Individual Time Trial – will take place on Friday, June 27.
This year’s championship route is located north of the Limfjord, starting from Toldbod Plads – or “Center Court,” as the area by Aalborg’s waterfront is called during DM Week.
This means that the Limfjords Bridge will be closed to all traffic between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
Drivers are advised to use the Limfjord Tunnel during this time if they need to cross the Limfjord, according to a press release from Aalborg Municipality.
If you’re walking or cycling, the Limfjords Bridge will remain open, but queues may occur when large crowds gather to watch some of the world’s best cyclists ride across the bridge — in both directions.
To avoid delays, cyclists and pedestrians are recommended to use the Kulturbro (Culture Bridge).
Extended Travel Time to the Airport
The major sports event also means travelers should expect extended travel times if heading to or from Aalborg Airport or the West Coast on Friday, June 27 between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
It is recommended to plan for extra travel time and pack some patience.
Due to safety measures for the cyclists, several roads in Nørresundby, Lindholm, Vadum, and Haldager will be closed.
In addition to the Limfjords Bridge closure, the following roads will be completely closed to all traffic: Forbindelsesvejen/Viaduktvej and Høvejen (4:00 PM–8:00 PM), and Ellehammersvej, Rullebanen, V. Halnevej, and Haldagervej (4:00 PM–6:30 PM).
Detours
A detour will be set up via Aabybro, and it is recommended to use Nørhalnevej and Bakmøllevej. Expect delays here too, as traffic lights will regulate traffic in one direction at a time over a 150-meter stretch between Hvorupgårdvej and Brorholtvej.
If your flight departs from or lands at Aalborg Airport and you need to get to the city, extended travel time should be expected as the route goes around the racecourse. Be sure to leave home early.
For those heading from Aalborg to the West Coast on Friday evening, it is recommended to go via the Limfjord Tunnel and then take exit 9 (Vestbjerg) or exit 8 (Tylstrup).
Road closures on Sunday
On Sunday, June 29, there will also be road closures due to the Danish National Road Race Championship.
Although traffic is usually lighter on Sundays, the Limfjords Bridge will again be closed to car traffic for a period.
The bridge will be closed from Saturday at 9:00 PM until Sunday at 9:00 PM. A number of roads in Nørresundby will also be closed from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM on Sunday due to the race circuit.
In addition, there will be rolling closures along the entire route, with roads closing 10 minutes before the cyclists pass and reopening shortly after.
General delays expected
Drivers should generally expect extended travel times throughout the city next week, as Aalborg hosts DM Week.
Strandvejen, located on Aalborg’s waterfront between Rendsburggade (FRIIS) and Ved Stranden, will be closed from Wednesday, June 25 at 6:00 PM until Sunday, June 29 at midnight.
