Significant changes: Trains get an entirely new timetable in North Jutland

If you travel a lot by train in North Jutland, there is good reason to read on.

In January 2026, a new timetable will come into effect that changes train operations in North Jutland.

This is stated by Nordjyllands Trafikselskab in a press release.

The regional train starting in Skagen will be extended all the way to Hobro, long-distance services will get shorter travel times with fewer stops, and Aalborg Airport will receive direct service by both IC and high-speed trains. Altogether, this is intended to better connect the rail network across the region.

Better connections across North Jutland

From January 17, 2026, it will become easier to travel across North Jutland – all the way from Skagen to Hobro – without having to change trains.

This will happen when Nordjyske Jernbaner’s regional trains are extended to also run between Skørping and Hobro as part of the upcoming timetable change.

At the same time, DSB will change its stopping pattern between Aalborg and Hobro to create faster connections between the region’s largest cities.

The background for the changes is a wish from DSB and the Danish Transport Authority for a more efficient timetable, where fewer stops reduce travel time between Aalborg and Aarhus – and onward toward Copenhagen. This results in more streamlined long-distance traffic, while local stations between Aalborg and Hobro will in the future be served by regional trains.

“The changes mean that Hobro will become part of the coherent North Jutland regional network for the first time, which we hope will help ensure even better connectivity and greater flexibility for citizens across the entire region.

In practice, it will be possible to travel from Skagen to Hobro without changing trains, which we hope will contribute to a more comfortable and direct travel experience,” says Ole Schleemann, Director of Customers and Operations at NT, which owns Nordjyske Jernbaner.

Stronger connectivity across the region

With the new timetable, IC trains will in the future only stop in Hobro, Skørping, and Aalborg in North Jutland. This means shorter travel times for long-distance services and more robust planning – partly because regional passengers between Aalborg and Hobro will in the future be served by Nordjyske Jernbaner’s trains, which operate on a shorter route.

“We expect that many local passengers will experience more punctual train operations, because the regional trains are not affected by delays from the south. This provides a more predictable everyday commute for the passengers who use the trains daily between the cities in the region,” says Ole Schleemann.

The expansion of the regional network also means that the regional train that currently runs between Hirtshals and Aalborg will in the future continue all the way to Skørping on weekdays during daytime hours.

This will make it possible to travel directly from Hirtshals, Hjørring, and Brønderslev to Skørping without changing trains. At the same time, Aalborg Airport will see a significant strengthening of train services, as both IC and high-speed trains will in the future run directly to the airport, creating new travel options to and from places such as Hobro, Randers, and Aarhus.

“The direct service to the airport is a major boost for the entire region. It will become easier to get to and from the airport by train, and it strengthens overall accessibility in the region – while also significantly expanding the airport’s catchment area,” Ole Schleemann concludes.

To free up resources for the expansion of Nordjyske Jernbaner’s regional trains, there will be hourly service on the regional network during holiday periods instead of half-hourly service.
